$5.15? Too Low Too Long. $6.85 in 2006!
|
For 30 years, ACORN has fought hard for the rights of working families. In Michigan, we've joined with our allies in the Michigan Needs a Raise Coalition in organizing a ballot drive to raise Michigan's minimum wage. Congress and the state legislature have refused to even debate the issue, so we're taking the struggle directly to the citizens of Michigan in the form of a ballot proposal. Our goal is to raise the minimum wage $1.70 to $6.85 per hour, and index the wage to inflation. For a record 9 years, the minimum wage has sat at $5.15 an hour. Meanwhile, gasoline, heating, rent, health care, and other necessities have all increased dramatically. More than 400,000 workers in Michigan make less than $7.00. 70% of thos workers are adults, and 40% are the sole breadwinners for their families. It is high time that Michigan learned to reward working families with a just wage. |
